Airport Transit

"Airport Transit Visa" means a visa valid for transit through the international transit areas of one or more airports of the Member States.

Application for visa must be submitted in person with no more than 180 days in advance to your trip and at least 15 days before. Applications with more than 180 days in advance to your trip will not be accepted. Crew members can apply 9 months in advance.

Please note:- Citizens from Dutch overseas territories will no longer need a visa to transit EU airports (citizens from Aruba, Curaçao, San Martín, Bonaire, San Eustaquio and Saba).

Airport Transit Schengen Visa is destined for those travelers that have to stop and wait for several hours for their next flight in the International Transit Area of the designated airport. These travelers cannot leave the International Transit Area of the airport, therefore accommodation in the city is off the limits.

The maximum validity period of an airport transit visa cannot be higher than 6 months. The holder can only transit once, twice o multiples times through the international transit area of the airport.

Applications for transit visas will be presented at the Foreign Mission of the country in which the first airport transit will take place. Spain will only process transit visas if a Spanish airport is the first point of entry.

Application for visa must be submitted in person with no more than 90 days in advance to your trip and at least 15 days before. Applications with more than 180 days in advance to your trip will not be accepted.

Who needs a transit visa?

Nationals of the following countries shall be required to hold an airport transit visa when passing through the international transit areas of airports situated on the Territory of the Member States:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Eritrea
  • Ethiopia
  • Ghana
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Somalia
  • Sri Lanka

Nationals of the following countries shall be required to hold an airport transit visa when passing through the international transit areas of airports situated on Spain:

  • Côte d'Ivoire
  • Cuba
  • Djibouti
  • Guinea
  • Guinea Bissau
  • India
  • Liberia
  • Mali

You may be exempt from the airport transit visa requirement:

  • holders of a valid uniform visa, national long-stay visa or residence permit issued by a Member State;
  • third-country nationals holding the valid residence permits listed in Annex V of the Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 establishing a Community Code on Visas (Visa Code), issued by Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino or the United States of America guaranteeing the holder’s unconditional read mission;
  • third-country nationals holding a valid visa for a Member State or for a State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area of 2 May 1992,Canada, Japan or the United States of America, or when they return from those countries after having used the visa;
  • family members of citizens of the Union as referred to in Article 1(2)(a);
  • holders of diplomatic passports;
  • flight crew members who are nationals of a contracting Party to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.

Note: Exemption of Visa Fee for a child is applicable only in the case of Short Term category, if the child's age is less than 6 years at the date of submission.

BLS International Service charge

Applicants applying at the Spanish visa application Centre shall be levied a service charge of 18 USD /- (inclusive tax) payable in cash or Debit Card.

Documents Required:

Travel Insurance is mandatory for travelling to Spain. You may get your travel insurance from any authorized insurance company/agent or you may Click here if you wish to avail it now from Europ Assistance.

  • Passport. With a validity of at least 12 months. It shall contain at least two blank pages and it shall have been issued within the previous 10 years.
  • Two Color Photographs. The photographs must have been taken within the last six months and must measure 3,5 cm x 4,5 cm with the head centered in the frame. The head must measure around 3 cm from the top of the hair to the chin. Photographs must be in color and have a white background. Photographs with a different background will not be accepted. Photographs depicting a person wearing a traditional facemask or veil that does not permit adequate identification are not acceptable. Sample photograph:
  • One photocopy of passport data page and all pages of the passport with visas.
  • Two Schengen Visa Application Forms, one in Spanish and one in English. Both forms must be legible and must be signed by the applicant. Forms of applicants under 18 years old must be signed by both parents. IT IS COMPULSORY THAT ALL FORMS CONTAIN A TELEPHONE NUMBER AND A LEGIBLE EMAIL ADDRESS WITH CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • Flight Booking. We do not ask for purchased tickets, it is enough with a booking. Applicants must include the flights between Spain and other countries.
  • A valid visa issued by the destination country.
  • An Introductory Letter indicating the purpose of the journey and providing details about it.
  • Applicants must be resident in Nigeria or Benin Republic. Non-Nigerian applicants must demonstrate that they are residing legally in Nigeria. Applicants residing in Benin Republic that do not hold the Beninese nationality must demonstrate that they are living legally in Benin Republic.
  • Payment of visa fee. Applicants shall pay a visa fee that shall be revised regularly in order to reflect the administrative costs. The visa fee shall be waived for applicants belonging to one of the following categories:
    • Children under six years.
    • School pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake stays for the purpose of study or educational training.
    • Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations.

The applicant shall be given a receipt for the visa fee paid.

During the examination of an application the Spanish Consulate may call the applicant for an interview and request additional documents.

Applications shall be decided on within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging, even though that period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days. Exceptionally, when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period may be extended up to a maximum of 60 calendar days.

Any fake document will lead to your application being rejected. An incomplete file may lead to a visa denial, even though a complete file does not guarantee the issuance of a visa.

Note: We regret we cannot accept photographs that do not meet these requirements

Please provide one recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) of yourself, which should not have been used previously in the passport. The photograph should be in colour and:

  • Taken against a white background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
  • Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
  • Full face, non-smiling [without sunglasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background]
  • Please stick the Photograph on the Visa Application Form.

Note: Please follow these instructions carefully. If photographs presented do not meet these requirements your application will be considered incomplete. A photo booth meeting these requirements is available at the centre.

Applications accepted at the Spain Visa Application Centre will be submitted on the next working day at the Consulate General of Spain. Once the application has been submitted, the applicant can be further requested additional documentation in support of the same. Please note as per the instructions received from Consulate General of Spain minimum processing time is 15 working days (It may delay depending on case to case).

All applications must be submitted at least 15 days prior to the proposed date of travel to accommodate any unforeseen processing delays.
