Student Visa

IMPORTANT NOTICE

In accordance to the Law RD 1155/2024, the New Immigration Regulation comes into effect on May 20th, 2025 introducing significant changes to current visa procedures. This may require additional documentation that is not listed on the current website and will be updated as soon as possible.

The changes in the new regulations for ​General Student visa are as follows:

  • Applications must be submitted at least two months in advance of the start date of studies.
  • The passport must be valid for at least one year. For all National visas too.
  • Applicants must provide proof of having paid the registration and enrollment fees by the school/University/Educational institution in Spain.
  • Health insurance must be valid from at least one month before the start of studies until 15 days after the end of the studies, or for one year if the duration of the studies is longer than one year.
  • The student visa will be processed by adding one month prior to the start date of the studies and 15 days after completion. For example:
    • For an acceptance letter - from October 1, 2025 to July 1, 2026
    • The visa must be processed - from September 1, 2025 to July 16, 2026
  • Medical certificate ( Bilingual ) – Templates can be avail under Download forms.

The total duration registered will determine whether is considered a SSU or SLU. Family members: Only applications from family members of bachelor or master degree students are accepted. . Furthermore, they cannot submit their application simultaneously with the principal; they must wait until the principal’s autorization has been granted beforehand. (NALCAP family members will not be allowed to apply )

Must apply to a student visa those foreigners who wish to:

  • Carry out or extend studies in an authorized educational center in Spain, in a full-time program, leading to the obtaining of a degree or certificate of studies.
  • Participate in a student mobility program, follow a secondary education program and / or baccalaureate in an officially recognized teaching or scientific center.
  • Carry out research or training activities.
  • Carry out non-labor practices in a public or private organization.
  • Provide volunteer service within a program that pursues objectives of general interest.

US citizens (or any other nationality that does not require a visa to enter Spain) who travel to study less than 90 days do not need to apply for this visa.

The Consulate General of Spain in Boston has jurisdiction over the following states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont (State ID required).

Visa applications must be submitted well in advance of the start of the relevant study programmes, as the procedure involves consultations with other authorities. Incomplete applications are not allowed.

Family members who can obtain a visa to accompany the student:

  • Spouse or legally recognized domestic partner.
  • Children under 18 years of age or children with disabilities.
    Family members will not be able to work during their stay in Spain.

Ways to present documents: All applications for study visas (students and family members, conversation assistants, au pairs, volunteers, etc.) must be submitted IN PERSON at BLS Visa Aplication Center for Spain in Boston.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

1. National Visa Application Form

Each applicant must fully complete and sign one visa application form.

  • If the applicant is a minor, the form must be signed by both parent or a legally accredited representative.
  • Make sure your date of birth is written as DAY / MONTH / YEAR (Spanish format).
  • Do not forget to include your email address and sign the form.

2. Recent Color Photograph (Photograph Service Available at the Center)

Submit one recent passport-size color photograph that meets the following requirements:

  • Size:2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm)
  • Color photos, taken within the last 6 months
  • White or off-white background
  • Neutral expression (no smiling)
  • Printed on matte or glossy paper
  • The photo must be original (copies will not be accepted)

Important: Do not staple or paste the photo onto the application form

3. Visa Fee Payment

Please check the “Visa Fees” section of the website for detailed and updated payment information.

4. Valid Passport

You must submit a valid and current passport that:

  • Has at least two blank pages
  • Is valid for the entire duration of your stay in Spain
  • Remains valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Spain
  • Was issued less than 10 years ago

Important: Emergency passports are not accepted

5. Notarized Proof of Residence (Boston Jurisdiction)

Applicants must prove they are legally residing or studying in person within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Spain in Boston, which includes: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine, and Vermont

Accepted documents (must show student’s name and address):

  • Student ID and university enrollment letter
  • Lease agreements, utility bills, or other official contracts

All documents must be notarized on the same page.

Important: Drive license or Mass ID aren’t acceptable as a proof of residents.

6. U.S. Immigration Status

(Not required for U.S. citizens)
Submit a notarized copy of one of the following:

  • Green Card
  • Valid U.S. student visa
  • Work permit (stamp in passport)
  • Parole document

Important: The document must be notarized on the same page.

7. Proof of Admission in Spain

You must submit one of the following official admission certificates issued in Spain:

  • Admission to a recognized university or school confirming full-time enrollment leading to a degree or certificate
  • Admission to a research or training center for a full-time program leading to a degree or certification
  • Admission to a study center, host family, or institution, including a written commitment from the program organizer to cover expenses (if applicable)

Important: The letter must be in Spanish language

Proof of Financial Means

Applicants must show proof that they have enough financial resources to cover their stay in Spain and their return to their home country. Original documents and copies are required.

Minimum Required Amounts

  • Applicant: at least $700 per month
    This requirement may be waived only if accommodation is fully paid in advance for the entire stay.
  • Family members accompanying the applicant:
    • $525 per month for the first family member
    • $350 per month for each additional family member

Important: These amounts are separate from tuition or study-related expenses.

Accepted Proof of Financial Support

You must submit at least ONE of the following:

  • Letter from the university or school (in Spain or the U.S.) confirming that it assumes full financial responsibility during your stay This letter must be in Spanish language (This is often included in the admission letter.)
  • Proof of financial aid or scholarship covering at least $700 per month for living expenses.
  • Notarized letter from parents or legal guardians confirming financial support of at least $700 per month.
    This must include:
    • The notarized support letter
    • Parents’ or guardians’ bank statements
    • Applicant’s birth certificate

    Suggested wording: “I hereby certify that I am the (father/mother/legal guardian) of (applicant’s name) and that I will provide financial support of at least $700 per month during their stay in Spain. I also assume financial responsibility for any emergency that may arise.”

  • Important: Personal bank statements showing sufficient funds to cover at least $700 per month for the duration of the stay.

Applicants must submit a public or private health insurance certificate issued by a company authorized to operate in Spain (Certificate must be in Spanish language).

The insurance must meet ALL of the following conditions:

  • Cover all risks included in Spain’s public health system
  • Be valid for the entire duration of the authorized stay
  • Have no waiting periods
  • Have no co-payments or deductibles
  • Cover 100% of medical, hospital, and extra-hospital expenses
  • If coverage has a monetary limit, it must be at least €30,000

Important: Travel insurance is NOT accepted
Insurance cards alone are NOT accepted as proof of coverage

Medical certificate. ( Bilingual ) – Templates can be found under Download forms. Original and copy of a medical certificate accrediting that "the applicant does not suffer from any disease that could cause serious repercussions for public health pursuant to the 2005 International Health Regulations". Use this template.

If the Applicant Is a Minor (Under 18)

1. Identity of Parents or Legal Guardian You must provide:

  • Notarized and Apostille Copy of the parent’s or legal guardian’s passport.
  • Document proving the relationship (birth certificate or legal guardianship document).
  • Originals must be shown when submitting the application.

If applying through a representative:

  • Notarized and Apostille Copy of the representative’s ID or passport.
  • Power of attorney or document proving representation.
  • Originals must be shown at submission.

Important:

  • Birth certificate or guardianship document must have been issued within the last 90 days.
  • Foreign documents must be Apostilled (Hague Apostille).
  • Copies of ID documents must be notarized.
  • If applying by mail, original ID must be shown when collecting the passport.

Additional Requirements – Student Visa for Minors (Under 18)

If the minor is not traveling with their parents, the application must be submitted by the parents or legal guardians.

In addition to the general requirements, submit:

1. Birth Certificate

  • Original birth certificate.
  • Must be Apostilled.
  • Must be translated into Spanish.
  • If the country is not part of the Hague Convention, it must be legalized by:
    • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country, and
    • The Spanish Consulate.

2. Parents’ or Guardians’ IDs

  • Legalized copies of passports or identity documents.

3. Notarized and Apostille Parental Authorization

A notarized and apostille authorization signed by both parents or guardians that includes:

  • Permission for the minor to travel to Spain.
  • Permission for the minor to apply for the visa
  • Name of the person who will care for the minor in Spain.
  • Information about the school/center/organization responsible.
  • Duration of stay.
  • Full details of the caregiver in Spain (full name, DNI or NIE number, address).

Important: If the document is not in Spanish, you must present a certified translation (Certified translation company information available on our website)

4. Declaration from Caregiver in Spain

  • Notarized declaration from the person who will care for the minor.
  • Copy of their DNI or NIE.
  • Certificate of Sexual Offenses Record (if required by regulation).

Notarized Declaration – Person Responsible for the Minor in Spain

The person who will take care of the minor in Spain must provide:

  • A notarized declaration confirming they will be responsible for the minor.
  • A copy of their DNI or NIE.
  • A Certificate of Sexual Offences Record issued by the Spanish Ministry of Justice (Registry of Sexual Offenders).

Alternatively, the caregiver may provide:

  • An express authorization allowing the Spanish Administration to obtain this certificate directly.

Important: If the document is not in Spanish, it must be translated into Spanish.

If your stay in Spain is over 180 days will be required: Criminal Record Certificate (For Applicants 18 and Over)

Applicants aged 18 or older must submit:

  • A criminal record certificate issued within the last 6 months.
  • The certificate must confirm that the applicant has no criminal record in any country where they have lived during the last 5 years.

Important: Not required for applicants under 18 years old.

Additional Information:

FBI Background:

  • The background check must be verified by fingerprint comparison.
  • It must be issued by the U.S. Department of Justice – Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
  • State or local police certificates are not accepted.

Legalization and Translation Requirements:

  • The criminal record certificate must be Apostilled.
  • It must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator.
  • The translation does NOT require an Apostille.
  • The Apostille does NOT require translation.

If You Lived in Another Country:

If the applicant has lived for 6 months or more in another country within the last 5 years, they must submit:

  • A criminal record certificate from that country.
  • Proper legalization:
    • Apostille (if the country is part of the Hague Convention), or
    • Legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Spanish Consulate (if not part of the Hague Convention).

Important: Official Spanish translation.

If the applicant has spent six month or more during the last five years in another country/State, he/she must submit the police records from that country/State, legalized with the Apostille Certification and translated into Spanish. If the country is not part of the Hague Convention the document must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Spanish Consulate in that country.

Please provide one recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) of yourself, which should not have been used previously in the passport. The photograph should be in colour and:

  • Taken against a white background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
  • Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
  • Full face, non-smiling [without sunglasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background]
  • Please stick the Photograph on the Visa Application Form.

Note: Please follow these instructions carefully. If photographs presented do not meet these requirements your application will be considered incomplete. A photo booth meeting these requirements is available at the centre.

The visa collection, regardless of the form of presentation, always have to be picked up IN PERSON by the student/conversation assistant/volunteer/au pair, etc., at the BLS Visa Service for Spain office.

The Consulate General of Spain, through BLS – Spain Visa Application Center, Boston, will notify the resolution of the application. The passport must be collected by the applicant personally at the offices of BLS – Spain Visa Application Center, Boston, from Monday to Friday between 3:00 and 4:00 PM, within a maximum period of two months. If the collection is not carried out within the period, it will be understood that the interested party has renounced the visa granted, and the procedure will be archived.

Once the visa has been collected, the applicant must enter Spanish territory during the period of validity. Within one month of entry (for stays longer than 180 days), the foreigner must personally apply for the Foreigner's Identity Card, at the Police Station, Aliens and Documentation Section closest to his home. In the case of minors, this procedure may be carried out by a representative.

If the duration of the studies does not exceed six months, the visa will be sufficient to document the stay.

The processing time for this type of visa can take approximately 3 to 5 weeks. It is recommended that air tickets are not purchased until the visa is granted.

The Consulate General of Spain in Boston has full authority to evaluate and request additional documents from those initially submitted by the applicant.
