Family Member of EEA/EU Citizens (Parents, Children and Spouse only)

Schengen short-stay visa for Spouses of E.U. citizens as far as the Marriage certificate is registered/recognized by the authorities of any E.U. Country, otherwise general tourist Schengen visa will apply.

Family members of citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are exempt from paying the visa fee, provided they travel with the latter or are meeting with them. Family members of citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are understood to be: the spouse or partner with whom they maintain a union similar to the conjugal one registered in a public registry established for that purpose in one of the previous countries; their descendants and those of their spouse or common-law partner who are under 21 years of age or over that age who are dependent or incapacitated; and the direct ascendants and those of their spouse or domestic partner who are dependent on them. In any case, it will be necessary for them to prove their kinship bond and that they travel or are going to meet them.

Application for visa must be submitted in person with no more than 180 days in advance to your trip and at least 30 days before.

Note: Exemption of Visa Fee for a child is applicable only in the case of Short Term category, if the child's age is less than 6 years at the date of submission.

BLS International Service charge

Applicants applying at the Spanish visa application Centre shall be levied a service charge of 18 USD /- (inclusive tax) only by debit card. Children under 6 are exempted from service charge.

  • Marriage Certificate is registered in the country of the EU citizen's nationality

Documents Required By Consulate General of Spain, San Francisco

Note: Please ensure you have checked the jurisdiction section before submitting your application at San Francisco. You can only apply 6 months or 15 days before your travel to the Schengen Area

Travel Insurance is mandatory for travelling to Spain. You may get your travel insurance from any authorized insurance company/agent or you may Click here if you wish to avail it now from Europ Assistance.

  • One Schengen application form (Total of 4 pages) duly filled out and signed on the last page. (Please use form only from BLS or Consulate of Spain website - Visa can be rejected if form is not duly signed or filled completely).
  • A passport or official travel document. Passport should be no older than 10 years and be valid for three months from the expected date of return to the United States. Please make sure your passport has at least two blank pages.
  • One passport size photograph: in color, 35 mm x 45 mm in size, printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper, taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance and in front of a plain white or off-white background, non-smiling.
  • Proof of residence in the consular jurisdiction: That proves residence within the jurisdiction of the Consulate of Spain in San Francisco (original and photocopy). Any of the following forms of identification are acceptable, always when and where they are valid the day of the appointment: driver's license with current address, state identity card, voter registration card, student ID.
    When necessary to assess the application, the Consular Office may request additional documents or data and may also ask the applicant to come in for a personal interview.
  • Proof of legal residence in the United States (Original and a Photocopy):
    Must present one of the following documents:
    • Original and copy of Permanent Resident Card (Green card)
    • Valid US long-term Visa
    • F1 student visas must also submit original and copy of I-20 form
    • Holders of B-1/B-2 visas cannot apply in the United States; they must apply in their country of permanent residence.
  • Proof of Jurisdiction: Valid ID or Driver License. Only residents from San Francisco, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
  • Confirmed reservation of your airline ticket (round-trip) with a booking reference number. Just a flight reservation is required. It is highly recommended not to buy the tickets until you get your visa.
    • If you plan to travel by car, you will need to provide copy of driving license (if someone else is driving – a letter from them and copy of their passport), car insurance and V5 document (Car registration documentation) or car rental documentation.
    • You will also be required to provide full documentation showing means of crossing the borders (e.g. Bus tickets, Ferry tickets or Eurotunnel tickets).
  • Proof of stay (dates must be same as flight/travel dates):
    • A detailed hotel reservation with hotel name, complete address, phone and e-mail for the entire duration of stay including stay in other Schengen member states. If the reservation is not in the applicant’s name, a letter must be included from the booking person name stating the applicant is staying with them and a photo ID (Driver License or Passport copy) of that person.
    • The ORIGINAL invitation letter from a family member or friend issued by the "Policía Nacional" in Spain. A similar letter from a government agency if staying with friends or relatives in other Schengen Member states
    • If you are part of a tour or a cruise, include a letter from your travel agent stating a complete itinerary of cities and hotels. [Screenshots not accepted]
  • Documents required of EU Citizen:
    • Spanish Registered Marriage Certificate (Certificado de Matrimonio inscrito en el Registro Civil Español).
    • Residence Card or Passport Copy (DNI o Pasaporte)
  • Documents proving relationship to EU Citizens: Birth certificate in case of minors and Marriage Certificate or Libro de Familia in case of spouse.
    In case the Spouse is a Citizen from another Schengen country, must present the Registered Marriage Certificate and this one must be translated in Spanish/English.

Please provide one recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) of yourself, which should not have been used previously in the passport. The photograph should be in colour and:

  • Taken against a white background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
  • Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
  • Full face, non-smiling [without sunglasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background]
  • Please stick the Photograph on the Visa Application Form.

Note: Please follow these instructions carefully. If photographs presented do not meet these requirements your application will be considered incomplete. A photo booth meeting these requirements is available at the centre.

All applications must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the proposed date of travel to accommodate any unforeseen processing delays
